overview
for the most part, flower breeding is the same as ww/cf. this means no orange tulips, instead red x yellow makes purple. there’s a few exceptions, like white x white cosmos making black cosmos, in addition to red x red like later games. gold roses are also gotten slightly differently from later games, since flowers in gc don’t wilt and aren’t planned to be made to wilt in dx. this guide covers everything in acdx, including new flowers exclusive to it.
how to plant
ever since ww ive sworn by the cross-shape planting method i always saw on various guides. i start with a large patch of basics (red/yellow/white) planted like this
it's not technically necessary to do so, it'll work as long as they're touching in some way, but that's how i learned it. i also try to guarantee a large amount of color variety when first starting out. in the above screencap, i have good odds for black (red x red), orange (red x yellow), pink (red x white), and purple (white x white).
if something grows in, hybrid or not, i relocate it so the spots stay free for other flowers to grow in, and also so im not stuck cleaning a bunch of excess from this spot later on. when i feel like i have enough, i just switch out my breeding patches for maximizing hybrids (for example, pink x orange cosmos to try for more of each, or blue).
new flower growth (hybrid or not) happens at 6AM once watered and if it's touching another flower of the same species. if you, for example, have a patch of white cosmos and it's watered, it can either duplicate with another white cosmos, or grow a black one. i should also note that it's not a guarantee anything will grow at all, it's RNG-based.

how to get golden watering can
instead of the golden axe, farley gives you the golden watering can in acdx, with the axe gotten through a different method. same rules that would apply to obtaining the golden axe in vanilla apply to the watering can, where you obtain it through maintaining perfect town for fifteen days. as of now, the methods for reaching perfect town are unchanged from acgc, so i wont be covering it. if you need help with that, check out this https://nookipedia.com/wiki/Environment_rating. if it’s changed later on, i’ll cover it
